For those of you who don't know, I'm a music teacher at a public school in Westchester. That's all the background you need.

I was at my school, which is a k-5th grade school and this kid who looks maybe 12 years old is walking the halls. I know she doesn't go to the school because I know every 3rd 4th and 5th grader there. She asks, "Do you know where I can get a photocopy made?" I say sure and walk her to the faculty lounge. Then in the interest of avoiding awkward silence, I ask, "So what are you a 6th grader or something?" She replies, "9th." I felt bad, and attempted to take it back, I said, "just -jk-ing." She smiled and walked towards the door. On her way out she said, in a sort of patronizing tone, "You know, you can just say 'J K' it doesn't make sense to say 'just J K ing'." I was like, "Are you kidding me? My generation INVENTED 'jk' and pioneered all of its playful variations!" (ok, so I didn't say it that well, but it was something like that.) I accidentally dissed her by calling her a 6th grader, and she got me back by mistaking me for an out of touch 30 something trying to sound cool.
